Understanding AI Citations

Our AI citation checker scans 7 AI surfaces at once: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Muse, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode. Enter any topic above to see who each AI cites — and which sources they pull from.

But each AI works differently. Here's how citations function across every platform we track.

How AI Citations Work (All Platforms)

When an AI answers your question, it operates in one of two modes. In default mode, it draws on its training data — no live web access, no real citations. Any links you see may be hallucinated patterns rather than retrieved pages. In search mode, the AI queries the live web and returns clickable sources. You can only be cited in the second mode.

Only about 18% of ChatGPT conversations trigger at least one web search, according to Profound's analysis of 700,000+ conversations. The other 82% never touch the live web.

ChatGPT Citations

How to view them: Look for linked text or numbers embedded in the answer. Hover to preview the source, click to open it. After the response finishes, look for a "Sources" button to see everything ChatGPT consulted.

What triggers search: Your opening question matters most. Profound found that Turn 1 is 2.5× more likely to generate citations than Turn 10, and nearly 4× more likely than Turn 20. (Source: Profound)

Search backend: Officially Bing via the Microsoft partnership. However, independent "sting" tests found evidence of Google index usage in the paid tier. (Source: ACME.BOT) (Source: Search Engine Land)

Most-cited sites: Wikipedia appears in roughly 1 in 6 cited conversations, followed by Reddit at 13%. (Source: Profound)

Claude Citations

How to view them: Claude displays citations as numbered references linked to source URLs. Clicking opens the original page in a new tab.

Search backend: Brave Search, supplemented by Common Crawl data. (Source: Search Engine Land) This means Claude's citation patterns differ from ChatGPT's — optimizing for Brave's index matters here, not just Google or Bing.

What to know: Claude tends to be more conservative about citing sources, often summarizing without links for general knowledge questions. Factual and current-events queries trigger more citations.

Gemini Citations

How to view them: Gemini shows source links inline and in a "Sources" panel. It also offers a "double-check" feature that highlights claims verifiable against web sources.

Search backend: Google Search — unsurprising given it's Google's own model. Also draws on digitized books, YouTube, and Common Crawl. (Source: Search Engine Land)

What to know: Gemini has the deepest integration with Google's index, making Google rankings the strongest predictor of Gemini citations.

Grok Citations

How to view them: Grok displays cited sources as clickable links within its responses, with a sources section for web-derived claims.

Search backend: Grok's own web search plus posts on X (Twitter). (Source: Search Engine Land) This makes X presence uniquely valuable for Grok visibility — content trending on X is more likely to surface in Grok answers.

Muse Citations

How to view them: Muse (Meta AI) shows source citations as linked references in its answers, similar to ChatGPT's format.

Search backend: Bing-powered web search through Meta's search partnerships, with additional signals from Meta's own data.

What to know: As Meta's AI assistant, Muse is increasingly integrated across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp — giving cited sources exposure across Meta's massive user base.

Google AI Overviews Citations

How to view them: AI Overviews appear at the top of Google search results with cited sources shown as link cards on the right side (desktop) or below (mobile). Clicking expands the cited snippet.

Search backend: Google Search — obviously. AI Overviews pull directly from Google's index.

What to know: Ranking in Google's top results is the primary driver of AI Overview citations. Pages already ranking well are the most likely to be cited.

Google AI Mode Citations

How to view them: AI Mode (Google's conversational search) displays citations inline as numbered links, with a full source list available.

Search backend: Google Search with Gemini-powered synthesis.

What to know: AI Mode represents Google's answer to ChatGPT — a full conversational interface. Citations here follow similar patterns to AI Overviews but with more detailed sourcing.

Which Websites Get Cited Most

Across platforms, Wikipedia dominates as the default knowledge layer — appearing in roughly 1 in 6 ChatGPT conversations with citations. Reddit, news publishers (Reuters, AP), and government/health sources (NIH) follow. (Source: Profound)

The citation economy is "wide but shallow" — the top 10 domains capture only 12% of all citations. Hundreds of thousands of sources split the rest, meaning there's real opportunity for niche sites to get cited.

Sources also travel in packs: ChatGPT tends to co-cite domains in clusters (e.g., Glassdoor alongside Indeed and LinkedIn for career topics). Knowing your "citation neighbors" helps you position content where AI already looks. (Source: Profound)

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my website cited by AI?

Publish clear, factual, well-structured content that directly answers questions. Use descriptive headings, include statistics with sources, and ensure your site is indexed by both Google and Bing (since different AIs use different search backends). Listicle-style content ("best X" roundups) tends to get cited disproportionately.

Why does ChatGPT cite Wikipedia so much?

Wikipedia's structured format, neutral tone, and comprehensive coverage make it ideal training and retrieval material. Rather than competing with Wikipedia, aim to be the next source cited after it — answering the specific questions Wikipedia doesn't cover in depth.

Do I need to rank on Google to get AI citations?

It helps significantly for Gemini, AI Overviews, and AI Mode (all Google-powered). For ChatGPT, Bing rankings matter more. For Claude, it's Brave Search. The safest bet is visibility across all major indexes.

Can I check which AI platforms cite my site?

Yes — that's exactly what the tool above does. Enter your brand name or topic to see citations across all 7 surfaces.
